Are New Roofers Still Coming Through?

What About the Future of Roofers?

Hi there gang, lets have a look at what is going on in the world of roofing shall we?
First of, this is a great story here because we definitely need new blood to come into the roofing industry, many kids these days are more interested in I.T and software and things that are computer based which is great, we need those people. But we also need Roofs! And roofs get damaged, need replacing etc etc so we need skilled roofing contractors to take care of these problems, we also need to up our solar panel installation so again, we need the experts for this too so I always like to comment on stories like this.

Two construction firms have benefited from a national scholarship scheme which enables them to take on an apprentice who is entirely funded to work for them for 12 months.
The initiative was launched by construction audit, contract and payroll provider, Hudson Contract, to celebrate its 20th anniversary and also provide opportunities for two young apprentices hoping to take their first steps on the construction career ladder.

To say we need more schemes like this is an understatement! I am very happy to see things like this happening so lets hope we see more of them!
And dont forget peopl that the World Championship for Young Roofers will be taking place very soon, 7 days to be exact! Again it’s always great to see young lads honing their roofing skills.

Four outstanding young roofers from around the United Kingdom will be heading to Poland this coming October to take part in the bi-annual World Championship for Young Roofers, organised by the International Federation of Roofing Contractors (IFD). This year the competition is being hosted by the Polish Roofing Trade Association, Polskie Stowarzyszenie Dekarzy (PSD).

The Metal Cladding and Roofing Manufacturers Association (MCRMA) has announced a new member company to the Association.
Charnwood Roofing Associates has joined as a member of the independent roofing and cladding inspectors group.
This group was formed by MCRMA as part of its continuing drive to raise standards and ensure compliance across the industry.

Well done to Charnwood Roofing Associates as I believe it’s good to be part of bigger groups like this, it can anly help and I hope that thi will work out well for them as I am sure it will. North Wales manufacturer BIPVco Ltd to provide solar PV cells for global brewing giant
Global drinks giant SAB Miller has reached an agreement with a UK manufacturer to install “pioneering” solar integrated roofing at one of its breweries in Nigeria.
Announced yesterday, the deal with specialist integrated solar roof manufacturer BIPVco Ltd will see a pilot 2kWp ‘built-in’ photovoltaic system installed on the brewery’s roof as part of efforts to drive down SAB Miller’s carbon footprint.

You might be a little bit tired of me always talking about solar panels but hey, it is getting stronger and stronger so it really does need to be talked about, and what better place to install solar panels than in Nigeria, where there is slightly more Sun that here in Middlesbrough, only slightly tho 🙂
No for a trip down memory lane, with some thatched roofing, ah the good old days.
All 305 of Scotland’s traditional thatched buildings have been recorded for the very first time in a bid to stop them “vanishing off radar”. From humble croft houses in the Highlands to grand Arts and Crafts villas in Argyll, researchers embarked on the 18-month project to insure the preservation of the buildings for the future.

This is wonderfull news! The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings has done some great work here, it took them about 18 months in total to compile the data and they have really excelled themselves! Lets not forgot the Historic Environment Scotland who provided funding for this huge task and all who took part should be very happy with the results. I really recommend checking it out the images of the roofs really are stunning.
Now for something I found pretty funny, not for the roofers mind you but weirder things have happened.
A crew got to work removing old shingles on a Hendricks County church Monday only to discover they were at the wrong roof.

Oops! what a nightmare, lucky it was a forgiving pastor an not a home owner who came home from a bad day at work to see half of his roof gone! I feel sorry for these guys but it does seem that it was a genuine mistake but still…pretty big mistake!
Here is something I never thought I would see but it does look very useful indeed.

Hi there people,here we are again so lets talk about the latest news in the Roofing industry, and also what I found to be interesting too, and maybe I can sneak in some news about good old Middlesbrough we’ll see.

To start things off I came accross this story which caught my eye and although the UK, or most of the UK doesn’t see hail stone like this I think this is a crazy story none the less.

SAN ANTONIO – It has been more than five months since massive hail storms struck San Antonio and surrounding areas. Still, the impact of one of the costliest hail storms in U.S. history remains visible across the city.

“It’s the single worst event we’ve ever seen,” said Brad Beldon, CEO of Beldon Roofing. “It’s touched more people than any other storm.”

This is madness! There will be a lot of work here for local roofing companies but no one really wants to see this, weather damage done to your roof can be very bad but it is rare for damage like this to occur. I hope they get things up and running soon as the winter is definitely arriving.

If you have read other blog post on the Roofer Pro Middlesbrough site you would have seen our interest in the development of solar, again I think it will play a big part of the near future of roofing companies and contractors so I was pleased to see this development from the teaming up a Finnish and US based company, very clever stuff! Check it out.

A sheet-metal company that’s been in business for half a century in the south-western Finnish city of Turku is looking to the future. It has developed a new type of roofing that produces solar electricity. Virte Solar is one of the first companies in the world to produce solar roofing.

This is exciting news for me, the Finnish company has teamed up with an American based business to create this wonderful product, I have big hopes for this and will be keeping an eye on it. Here is a quote fom the CEO, Jaakko Virtanen: “I’ve dreamed of building materials that would themselves generate electricity, from roofs, windows and wall. Now that’s becoming a reality,”

Awesome stuff and I wish them all the luck in the world and the world needs this I’m sure!

Now for a company that had a very modest start, which is ARP

Aluminium Roofline Products (ARP) held an opening ceremony on 11 August to launch its new conveyorised wet paint spraying line.

The Leicester based business was founded in a garage 30 years ago and has since grown to occupy 30,000 sq ft premises at Meridian Business Park.

And now fo some fun. LEGO fun to be exact.

A BATTALION of lively robots were created in just four minutes by scientists, programmers and technicians of the future – with a little help from some world famous toy building bricks .

Children from schools across the region learned to build and programme robotic companions at the launch of Ayresome Park Primary’s Computing Lego Innovation Studio.

A pioneering partnership with Lego has allowed the Middlesbrough school to set a blueprint for creative play in schools across the North-East.

Not only are these the scientists of the future but also the builders too, including our beloved roofers, this is a fun read that comes with a nice short video, it’s always interesting to see the creativity of children and I hope they all have a big future which I’m sure they do!

Metal roofing panel reinvigoration

Here we go with the Roofing News again

This story here caught my eye, it is great and also pretty scary when you have to repair old buildings with lots of history like this, and I bet the team were definitely more careful than normal! But I’m guessing they are always careful anyway.

Nestled in the Columbia River Gorge, Tum-A-Lum Lumber Company has been a part of the small Hood River, Oregon community for more than 100 years. But when the owners realized the rapidly aging building needed a remodel, a new roof was not part of the initial plan.

Designers for the project initially thought patching and repairs would be sufficient for the 35-year-old, 17,000 square foot roof, however upon further inspection it was determined that the building needed a new roof. Early on, an entire tear off and replacement of the old metal roof was considered, even though it would have opened up the entire building to the elements.

I love to see new innovations within the roofing industry and of course the materials we use are typically at the fore front of advancement. This will be welcomed by all and we do hope that the newer materials will hold up stronger and for longer, we also hope this will be cheaper.

Funding will help pay for repairs to church roof

A HUGE grant from the Listed Places of Worship Roof Fund will help to save St Nicolas Church in Great Coates for future generations to enjoy.

The money – £58,400 – will be used to repair the roof of the south aisle of the village church, which had actually begun to move away from the rest of the building.

The Rector, Canon Peter Mullins, who has been based There for 16 years, explained: “We had wondered why water had begun to find a way in. The side aisle of a church is structurally only a lean-to, albeit a mediaeval one but that’s not unusual.

Another old building getting a new roof. I think we do need to look after these old buildings as they are part of our heritage and history so this is welcome news from me and I hope the roofing company that get this job do a sterling job which I am sure that they will and this is definitely one for their gallery!

Solar Shingles! Love it.

Solar shingles are now gaining increasing traction in the renewable energy landscape. They are architecturally distinctive, more so than traditional rooftop photovoltaic panels. Solar shingles provide an integrated building product providing both roofing security and solar electricity in one package.

I am a big follower of all things solar, especially solar roofing so I love to hear stories like and the innovation within the solar industry seems to be speeding up. About time too, we really need to look at being more sustainable so this is a big help as pretty much everyone has a roof and I believe everyone will have a solar roof in the next 10 to 20 years in the UK.

Now for some news a bit closer to home, the staff at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough had a very busy day due to the hot weather.

Trauma teams at Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital have been praised after dealing with one of the centre’s busiest days ever.

Hospital chiefs said there was a spike in trauma alerts thought to be due to the hot weather.

Among those injuries were falls and road traffic accidents, including motorcyclists that had been involved in collisions.

Well done to the staff their and lets hope that everyone makes a full recovery.

Is London Changing The Plan For Zero Carbon Homes?

Hi there, lets have a look at what is happening in the industry shall we, there was not too much going on but as always we live in a dynamic world so there is always something going on so let’s start with the capital, seems like a great place to start so lets do it.

It looks like London is cracking down on carbon which is coming into effect in October this year. This could mean a whole lot o work for roofing companie not just in London but also outside as many large towns and cities follow suite, including Middlesbrough and Teesside as we have seen more interest in solar panel installation so the future is bright.

As of October 1 2016, the London Plan requirements for energy statements are changing. All major developments will be required to be ‘zero carbon’ however if this cannot be achieved then a cash in lieu contribution will be sought.

In addition to the ‘zero carbon’ targets, further emphasis is to be placed on district heating networks and a new requirement to follow the cooling hierarchy, which includes an in depth overheating risk analysis, will be introduced. This blog will focus on the ‘zero carbon’ element of the GLA guidance1 on preparing energy statements.

This could be great for the roofing industry as those who are future proofing their company have gotten into solar in a big way so this could en a lot of business for those who had the foresight to see these changes coming. Solar panel installation is something we are experimenting with, but the demand for this on Teesside is not that big yet but it is growing.

An now for some sad news, a Jewsons in Hawick have been the victim of a pretty large, unfortunately people like this exist in our world which just shows that you can never be too careful, as Jewson are a large company and can afford top notch security and even then it did not work, shame.

Roofing materials worth £9,000 have been stolen from a builders’ merchant in Hawick.

Thieves broke into Jewson’s branch at Burnfoot Industrial Estate between 5.30pm on Tuesday, August 30, and 7am on Wednesday, August 31. They then made off with lead rolls and roofing felt worth about £9,000 altogether.

The theft was discovered by staff arriving at the store for work on Wednesday.

This is defintiely a shame and I really do hope that they catch the people responsible, that is quite a lot of gear to steal so they must of used a van to move it all so hopefully they can find the thieves through CCTV or something? I don’t know but it is serious as I like Jewsons, they are very handy, have great staff and offer competitive pricing so I hope they sort this one out.

Elon is at it again! This guy always sets massive goals and who could blame him? He has been wildly Successful with almost everything that he has done, so, what is he wanting to do now? Well let’s find out:

Elon Musk’s solar company has its sights set on replacing 5m rooftops in the US with traditional roofing materials integrated with solar cell technology.

SolarCity’s plans, announced last month, to develop traditional roofs made entirely from solar panels are part of a goal to make sustainable homes more aesthetically appealing, convenient, and ultimately affordable to the average homeowner.

It’s betting that people who need to replace their roofs will be attracted to the company’s solar cell option because it won’t require additional work or dramatically alter the look of the home.

Elon wants to refit 5 million homes in the US, that is a lot of roofs to replace, but if anyone can do it then it would be him for sure and I wouldn’t be suprised if he doubled that!

The Steel vs Timber Debate – How Will The Market React?

As readers will know, the roofing industry, like all industries is constantely evolving as new materials, tools and methods come into the market, so we would like to start this post of with some news from roofingtoday.co.uk which I am sure will be a hot topic of debate for many years to come!

With an increased emphasis on modern methods of construction and the benefits of off-site manufacturing, the steel industry is increasingly developing new systems for homes of the future.

Phil Bloomfield, Commercial Director at the British Board of Agrément (BBA), discusses how it could even challenge the dominance of timber-framed houses in the years to come.

There is nothing new about steel-framed homes – they were widely used to tackle the housing shortage just after the Second World War – and many are still standing and are being refurbished by housing associations to bring them up to modern standards.

This is very subjective in many cases, ofcourse, some will need steel ofcourse but I still think there is a place for Timber as well, we will see what the future will hold so I would suggest keeping an eye on this.

Now for some supplier news, yay! 🙂

IKO UK Group has signed a mandated supplier agreement with Willmott Dixon. This includes IKO Polymeric for the supply of Spectraplan TPE and Armourplan PVC single ply membranes. IKO will supply its range of bituminous roofing systems Permatec hot melt, Permaphalt mastic asphalt and IKO Polimar cold applied liquids.

“This is a significant agreement for both IKO Group and Willmott Dixon,” said Anthony Carlyle, managing director of IKO Polymeric. “We’ve worked with Willmott Dixon for many years now and developed an online hub that includes a product system selector and matches IKO business managers with projects geographically. We help with specifications, surveys, training and installation, depending on what the project needs.

This is a great move for Wilmott Dixon and IKO Group and I can see this partnership lasting as both companies have been in the roofing industry for many years and this is for a reason,  so pretty big deal here and I bet there was a lot going on in the background to make this happen so I wish them all the best.

Lets hear again from someone at IKO about how the dropping of the pound is effecting roofers up and down the country.

BMBI Expert Andy Williamson, Group Managing Director IKO plc, comments exclusively on Roofing Products for Q2 2016.

The pound has lost 8-10% of its value against the dollar over the last month or so. Few expect sterling to recover in 2016. This drop in value is having immediate effects. Here and now, it’s a challenge and an opportunity for the roofing industry.

Imported components, finished goods and raw materials will bump up the cost of living. Come September many of these price rises will be feeding through to industry and consumers. Britain will be getting used to a higher cost of living. That will be a shock, and RMI will come under inflationary pressures in the second half of the year with a potential rise in fuel costs, groceries and everyday goods. Over time it will feed into wages and salaries, although at a weaker and slower rate.

Looking gloomy here but as we know, these cycles are very common and the pound will resurge because all thing do, so if you have been alive long enough you will have experienced these ups and downs, we will recover in my opinion so all we can do is to continue providing quality services to our customers.

Are BMF And NFRC Announcing A Strategic Partnership?

So, lets get started with some news regarding the Builders Merchants Federation and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors shall we?

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) and the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) have agreed a strategic partnership with the aim of enhancing the support both organisations offer their members.

The BMF and the NFRC share an ambition to professionalise their respective industries by promoting the highest standards and under the new partnership agreement the NFRC will provide essential technical information to BMF members who specialise in roofing materials.

I think this is great for the roofing industry as a whole, I believe when partnership’s like this happen then it makes it harder for the cowboy’s of the industry to rip off unaware people, which can cost literally thousands to fix! Now for some exciting news from a great entrepreneur, Elon Musk

Earlier this month, Elon Musk made news again when he announced his intention to offer solar roofs, a product he sensed might need a few words of clarification.

“It’s a solar roof as opposed to a module on a roof,” he said on an earnings call about the planned merger between his electric car company, Tesla, with his cousin’s solar panel company, SolarCity. “It’s not a thing on the roof, it is the roof.”

This may be in the US but this can happen anywhere and just shows that safety is paramount, it looks like an electrical charge went through the ladder the were using! Very unlucky and a terrible tragedy.

Roofing News August

A little round up of some things within the roofing industry that we found interesting, here we go.

Eight roofing apprentices will compete in the final of this year’s SkillBuild competition in Birmingham later this year.
Organised by roofing trade association, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), 55 UK-based young roofers demonstrated their skills at regional heats between April and July in the hope of starring on the national stage at the NEC on November 17-19.
It is great to see new blood coming into the roofing industry! Many young kids these days are more bothered about making the newest app, but I doubt there will be an app that can fix a leeky roof any time soon! These young lads are building a trade that will be very useful not just for them, but who they serve in the near future, well done lads. To check out our services then click here

Next up we have some news on what I believe to be the future of roofing and that ofcourse is green roofing.
